“People of different faiths, like yours and mine, sometimes wonder where we can meet in common purpose, when there are so many differences in creed and theology. Surely the answer is that we can meet in service, in shared moral convictions about our nation stemming from a common worldview.”
Mitt Romney
The presumed GOP presidential candidate, a Mormon, was addressing graduating stuents at Liberty University on May 12. (RNS)

“Michael has spent a number of years in the faith-based office so he knows the territory. But the Republicans would put somebody senior with years and years of experience and a big Rolodex in that position. And I guess that tells you something about how Democrats still view faith outreach and its importance.”
Amy Sullivan
The author of a book on religion and American politics, was discussing the hiring of 23-year-old Michael Wear to head up outreach to religious communities for President Obama’s reelection campaign. She was quoted by the Washington Post.

“The president’s a man. ... And I love him. He’s a friend. But with the rest of my congregation—I never know how much of my counsel they’re going to take or not take.”
Joel Hunter
The Florida pastor, a spiritual adviser to President Obama, was referring to the president’s endorsement of same-sex marriage. He was speaking on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports.”
