EDITORIAL: Aunt Ida learns about fresh expressions from an unlikely source
Religious Herald
By Jim White
Friday, May 03, 2013
After a lively day at Blue Bell Baptist, when a large family returning to the church for a reunion inadvertently leaves one of the kids behind, the editor's fictional Aunt Ida discovers fresh expressions of church in a postmodern world. She can’t find it on the map, but she knows it’s got to be there somewhere.

VITAL SIGNS: How to ruin a sermon
Other Opinions
By Bill Wilson

Healthy churches are marked by engaging worship. Engaging worship is nearly always marked by excellent preaching. Don’t let anyone fool you: there is no one way to preach a sermon. There are, however, common traits that mark excellent preaching regardless of style or setting.

HERITAGE: 'What am I to do?'
Heritage
By Fred Anderson
Friday, May 03, 2013
The weekend of May 3-5 marked the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Chancellorsville near Fredericksburg, Va. OPINION: At home in the 17th century
Other Opinions

Seventeenth century Baptists would have known exactly what was happening when two Rowan County, N.C., state legislators recently proposed a resolution declaring that the United States Constitution does not “prohibit states or their subsidiaries from making laws respecting an establishment of religion.”

LEADERSHIP LINK: Does your church need an administrator?
Other Opinions
By Jim White

Chances are when pastors answer the call to ministry, administration is not what they have in mind. Usually, they believe that God is calling them to make a difference in people’s lives. Very few get excited about formulating budget reports, raising money, repairing aging buildings, mollifying disgruntled staff members and settling their disputes, sitting in committee meetings and managing church conflict.

EDITORIAL: What's this talk about a merger?
Religious Herald
By Jim White
Friday, April 26, 2013
The Religious Herald is more accustomed to reporting news than making it, so the story about a potential merger between the Herald and Associated Baptist Press makes me a bit uneasy. Even so, the enthusiasm of both governing boards leads me to believe that they will find a way to pull this off.

OPINION: A ragamuffin homecoming
Other Opinions
By Alex Gallimore
Friday, April 26, 2013
For the last week, so many of us have been saddened by the bombing of the Boston Marathon as well as the explosion in West, Texas. This same week, I too have cried over the loss of one who I know would have been the first to speak comforting words of grace and peace over these horrific days.

OPINION: Living and deadly worship
Other Opinions
By Lisa Cole Smith

The practicality of developing a worship service every week of the year in the midst of other duties makes it unlikely that every Sunday will have the same attention that Easter and Christmas do. Comfort comes from replicating experiences, efficiency of form and certainty of repeating what we already know.
