HERITAGE: Heap o’ livin’
By Fred Anderson
Sunday, September 30, 2012

Edgar Guest, the poet laureate of the common folk in the first half of the last century, said it best in his sentimental verse: “It takes a heap o’ livin’ in a house t’ make it home, a heap of sun an’ shadder .... By Fred Anderson

Barbara Dunn Jackson appreciated words and the nuances of their meaning. The walls of her home office were lined with many books on etymology. Barbara wrote a column called “A Last Word” for Synergy, which went to women in ministry. In a 1996 column, she examined a very specific word.

Hatcher, the prominent Virginia Baptist minister of a century ago, would have been proud.  He encouraged the same endeavor—choir singing.

HERITAGE: ‘While yet day’
By Fred Anderson
Saturday, July 21, 2012

In its 225 years High Hills Baptist Church at Jarratt, Va., has witnessed many sunrises. Each one brought challenges and opportunities. At the front of the church’s sanctuary there are two tablets memoralizing early pastors: Josiah C. Bailey (1813-1881) and James D. Brown (1846-1890). On Brown’s tablet are carved the words, “His sun went down while it was yet day.”

By Fred Anderson
Friday, July 06, 2012
Helen Emery Falls personified missions. As the daughter of a pastor, she early learned the Christian message, but it was her mother who inspired her about missions. She spent the greatest part of her working life teaching missions to seminary students as well as to countless laypeople.

Julian Howell Pentecost felt called to the ministry as a young boy.  He once confided his feelings to his mother who prayed for God’s guidance.  He was affirmed by his home church, Lawrenceville Baptist Church. In 1942 he entered the University of Richmond as a ministerial student.
