It seems likely that some of our national malaise has crept into churches and has created a climate of discontent out of which is springing much conflict. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that the political ship of state will right itself any time soon, so the answer to our dilemma does not appear to rest in Washington.

After a lively day at Blue Bell Baptist, when a large family returning to the church for a reunion inadvertently leaves one of the kids behind, the editor's fictional Aunt Ida discovers fresh expressions of church in a postmodern world. She can’t find it on the map, but she knows it’s got to be there somewhere.

The Religious Herald is more accustomed to reporting news than making it, so the story about a potential merger between the Herald and Associated Baptist Press makes me a bit uneasy. Even so, the enthusiasm of both governing boards leads me to believe that they will find a way to pull this off.

If a county board of supervisors began meetings by prostrating themselves on prayer rugs facing Mecca, I would be incensed. I think most Baptists would be. Whether the First Amendment sanctions or condemns the action is not the issue for me. Rather, in my mind the action is judged by a much older statute.

The church has always lived in tension between knowing clearly what the Bible says and understanding what the Bible means. Usually they are the same. Sometimes, they are not. The Bible is truly inspired, and the Spirit who inspired it, and the word he inspired, are dynamic enough to meet the challenges of change.

Tragically, many in the church are not quite sure what to make of Jesus’ words to forgive as we are forgiven. To see the truth of this, one has only to speak to hard-liners in a church fight. They lose objectivity, assign blame and want to hurt those who have hurt them. This is natural. Forgiveness is not.

I suspect many who oppose women pastors are also uncomfortable with the idea of Danica Patrick taking the checkered flag at Daytona. While they may resent and resist the changes, they cannot stop the sweep of time nor the call of the Spirit.

Some of you, like me, are old enough to remember Flip Wilson and his comic assertion, “The devil made me do it.” Now there seems to be research that backs up this claim. Well, maybe not the devil, exactly, but a genetic predisposition to evil. That is the recent suggestion of a German researcher.
