In the list of deacon qualifications (1 Timothy 3:8-13), Paul makes it clear that the deacon’s home life should be exemplary. This does not mean perfect, however, or no one would qualify!

As Christians, whether we be conservative or liberal, we should have enough faith in the mysterious work of the Holy Spirit to know that every new experience, discovery and life event brings about greater revelation and understanding of the Divine. Christian faith is never stagnant but transforming and evolving.

King championed the cause of equality in his letter, but he also the cause of the church in which he expressed disappointment.

One trait that seems to be ever-present in thriving congregations but largely absent in dying congregations is energy, or passion. High levels of energy and passion for the gospel mark congregations who have been seized by the enormity of their mission and have given themselves fully to it.

John Houghton encouraged diversity of thought and lively dialogue within the community of faith. As a result, we learned to think more deeply and consider things more broadly. John let us know that it was all right to be the devil’s advocate without worrying about going to the devil.
