OPINION: At home in the 17th century
Other Opinions
By Bill Leonard
Friday, May 03, 2013
Seventeenth century Baptists would have known exactly what was happening when two Rowan County, N.C., state legislators recently proposed a resolution declaring that the United States Constitution does not “prohibit states or their subsidiaries from making laws respecting an establishment of religion.”

LEADERSHIP LINK: Does your church need an administrator?
Other Opinions
By Jim White
Friday, May 03, 2013
Chances are when pastors answer the call to ministry, administration is not what they have in mind. Usually, they believe that God is calling them to make a difference in people’s lives. Very few get excited about formulating budget reports, raising money, repairing aging buildings, mollifying disgruntled staff members and settling their disputes, sitting in committee meetings and managing church conflict.

OPINION: A ragamuffin homecoming
Other Opinions
By Alex Gallimore
Friday, April 26, 2013
For the last week, so many of us have been saddened by the bombing of the Boston Marathon as well as the explosion in West, Texas. This same week, I too have cried over the loss of one who I know would have been the first to speak comforting words of grace and peace over these horrific days.

OPINION: Living and deadly worship
Other Opinions
By Lisa Cole Smith
Friday, April 26, 2013
The practicality of developing a worship service every week of the year in the midst of other duties makes it unlikely that every Sunday will have the same attention that Easter and Christmas do. Comfort comes from replicating experiences, efficiency of form and certainty of repeating what we already know.

VITAL SIGNS: There's no excuse
Other Opinions
By Bill Wilson
Friday, April 26, 2013

Are you an excuse maker? When someone makes a compelling case for action or movement, are you prone to start your response with the phrase “Yes, but …”? Do you see yourself as an exception to most rules? Making excuses is at the heart of a troubling spirit that plagues congregational life in America.

OPINION: Returning to Schleitheim
Other Opinions
By Andrew Gardner
Friday, April 26, 2013
There is certainly much that we could criticize and fault in the 16th-century Schleitheim Confession. I think, however, their commitment to peace and non-violence stands out within the corpus of Christian history as something to which our modern ears ought listen — perhaps even our modern Baptist ears.

TRENDING: 'Virginia Baptist' to 'General Association'
Other Opinions
By John Chandler
Friday, April 26, 2013
Ten years ago, Lyle Schaller put his finger on what has proven to be indisputably true in 2013: that we no longer organize around location but around shared interest, and that a congregation’s source of guidance is no longer programs from denominational headquarters but from targeted, focused peers.

OPINION: On questioning God
Other Opinions
By Daniel E. Glaze
Friday, April 26, 2013
I’ve often heard folks say something like, “I know we’re not supposed to question God, but ....” And then they unload a perplexing question for which they have been unable to find a rationale. I’m not certain of the origin of this idea of not questioning God. It’s certainly not biblical.
